Increasing amount of construction work in India is resulting in an increase in the number of architecture jobs for freshers in India. The main job responsibility of an architect is to design and implement the construction plan for any building or area. The job includes selection of site, field research and supervision, quality control, safety management, environmental planning, estimation and costing, supervising construction work and interior designing, to name a few. Architects are basically the overall head for construction and their responsibility starts from designing and planning of the structure till the same is erected.

The architects should have the ability to communicate their ideas visually to their clients. Their work begins with the layout and sketches of proposed structures customized according to client requirements and objectives. Immediately after the plans are finalized and accepted by the client, it becomes the responsibility of the architect to get approval and permission of the local authority for carrying out construction work. A qualified architect can work with several government organizations like housing and urban development corporation, central and state public work departments, city development authorities and municipalities and state housing boards, to name a few. They can also find suitable employment opportunities in private architectural firms, industrial ventures, consultancies, teaching institutions and in firms engaged in the development of real estate.

An individual can join as a building contractor, building researcher, building inspector, architectural historian/journalist, cartographer, surveyor, carpenter, marine architect, architectural engineer, set designer, urban planner, art director, interior designer, technical illustrator or landscape architect.

Eligibility for Architecture Jobs
An individual who wants to land up with a good architecture job in India has to be a B.Arch. However, for joining the B.Arch course, an individual needs to be a high school pass-out with a minimum of 50% marks in the three Science subjects, namely, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. In addition, one needs to qualify an entrance examination for studying B.Arch.

During your B.Arch degree program, you need to undergo a period of practical experience. An individual has to undergo apprenticeship under a practicing architect. Various subjects are taught during B.Arch degree program. Some of them include history of architecture, architectural design (drawing and painting), methods of construction, acoustics, draftsmanship, environmental planning, estimating and costing, structural designing, surveying and leveling, applied mechanics, materials management and computer applications. There are several institutions which provide knowledge on architecture-related software packages like AutoCAD and 3D Studio Max.

After completing B.Arch, an individual who wants to opt for higher studies can do Master of Architecture (M.Arch). Thereafter, he or she can register for Ph.D.

Apart from the degree course, individuals can also opt for various diploma courses in architecture offered by several institutions.

Good academic records are alone not sufficient for landing up with a good architecture job in India. An individual should also possess some additional qualities like:

• Excellent communication and drawing skills, creative bent of mind, vivid imagination and good observation power;
• Designing skill, aptitude for business, legal knowledge and social awareness;
• Good mathematical skill;
• Sufficient knowledge on all aspects of building technology for designing according to customer
• specifications under different conditions;
• Leadership and managerial skills and the ability to work in teams;
• Knowledge of computer for writing specifications, financial management and two- and three-dimensional drafting.

Salary Package Expected
A freshly qualified architectural graduate working as a trainee with some popular architects in India can expect somewhere between Rs. 4000 to Rs. 7000 per month. This may increase up to Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 20,000 per month upon attaining relevant experience and based on the nature of work. However, architects working in the government sector do not get a lucrative pay package as those working in the private sector.
